The average British woman outspends her counterparts in Europe when buying make-up, according to research. Women here spend around 36 pounds (69 dollars, 54 euros) each on make-up every year, the most among women in France, Germany and Spain. French women come second, spending about 32 pounds each on make-up.

Their annual spending will propel Britain’s cosmetics market to the highest among the four countries, totalling one billion pounds, according to market research firm Mintel.

In terms of spending on fragrances, however, Spanish women lead the pack, with an average of 40 euros each on perfume — about eight euros more than French women, who again rank second.

About 96 percent of Spanish women use fragrances, a trend matched by Spanish men, about 85 percent of whom use cologne. A similar number of German men use fragrances, followed by the English at 72 percent, and the French at 66 percent.

France has the biggest combined market of fragrances and make-up, however, totalling just under three billion euros, followed by Britain at 2.8 billion euros. Germany is third with a market of 2.4 billion euros.
